Indonesia is the world’s third-largest rice producer and also one of the world’s biggest rice consumers. Cities like Java are known for its gorgeous land and its tropical climate, beautiful mountains and where paddy rice terraces lie between the hills. Rice has been part of their culture through the years and, at the same time, attached to the religion which is very sacred in the region.
A Lumpang is the Javanese word for Rice-Mortar, is commonly used to dehull rice or to turn rice into rice flour. It is made of whole hard-wood that was shaped like a boat by carving it.
Some of these Lumpang have been reclaimed for different purposes, either for furniture or for decoration. Our lumpangs can be used as garden planters and may vary in look and size.
